Crash course in backgammon - Playing for Fun
March 28th, 2007
After registering and redeeming your $2 bonus you shouldn’t rush into things and spend it all in one go. Instead, you should take a little time to get familiarized with your new online backgammon site and to learn what you can and can’t do. It’s time to play for backgammon for fun.
Backgammon school
One of the best things available for beginners in Gammon Empire is the backgammon school. Combined with basic understanding of backgammon rules, the backgammon school can teach you a lot in a relatively short time.

The Backgammon school is an interactive learning tool where the computer gives the best moves after each you can compare to your own move, teaches you when to double and rates your games. It really is a great way of learning backgammon and as a bonus in Gammon Empire you don’t need to pay a cent to use the backgammon school.
Backgammon for free
Although you are not paying anything you still have a number of options to choose from to play backgammon against real people. There are thousands of players online in Gammon Empire 24/7 so there is no shortage of opponents. It is interesting how everything changes when you know you are playing against a real person instead of the computer, even if it is for fun money only. However, while nothing is at stake it is there where you get accustomed to the excitement and learn how to deal with the real life game situations.

Fun money works the same way as Real money. You can participate in Live regular table matches and Sit and Go tournaments, but regular tournaments and special events are available only in real money mode. You pay a certain amount of buy-in in each game or tournament you play and you can either win or loose it all. Since no harm is done by loosing fun money you should try out all possible games to get a grip of the user interface, interaction between players, but most importantly to learn to play backgammon.
Do it but don’t overdo it
It would be stupid to sign up as a new player, deposit a sizable sum of money to your player account and start playing for Real money before feeling comfortable and knowing much about backgammon. That’s one of the fastest ways to loose motivation and forget about backgammon. However, if you do want to earn some money by playing backgammon there are a few good reasons why you shouldn’t spend too much playing for fun money. Instead of listing them all here you can read our Backgammon for money article, where we compare fun and real money gaming to each other.
When you feel comfortable and confident enough you can make the transition to the world of real money backgammon. You can now put your precious $2 bonus to good use and get a feel for winning and loosing real money. Start off with live regular tables, preferably with 3-5 point matches as well as with Sit and Go tournaments. Longer matches tend to teach you a great deal more than single point matches. For any tournament however, you will almost certainly need to head for the cashier to do your first deposit. That, however, is the subject of our next article. In the meantime, go learn and enjoy!
